What Gemini Apps Activity Really Saves — and What Turning It Off Does and Doesn’t Stop

You can find your Gemini Apps Activity in your account records. This is where you will find the history of your conversations with Gemini, as well as any saved activity that Google can use to improve its services. When you turn off your Gemini Apps Activity, you prevent any new chats from appearing in your long-term activity history. Furthermore, with no activity history, those chats will not be used as part of training for Google’s AI Models (unless you provide feedback). However, the Gemini service will continue to receive and process everything you send to it.

The difference between Keep Activity On vs. Off, on the Gemini Apps for Android and iOS (as well as gemini.google.com) is important. When Keep Activity is turned Off, Google says it retains new conversations (in your account) for up to 72 hours in order to provide and protect its service; however, all of the features connected to your activity will become unavailable. If you choose to delete your existing Gemini Apps Activity, it is a separate and potentially destructive option to the one above. The word “activity” suggests that there is much more information contained within it than simply a list of past activity.

What Gemini Apps Activity Saves — and Why It Isn’t Just a Log

If you have a personal Google Account that has been signed in, then your activity settings control the storage of your Gemini conversation history on the account. In addition to the Gemini conversation history, your activity settings may also store the requests you made, responses from the Gemini application, images, videos or screen shots, Gemini Live transcripts, and product and location data associated with your conversation history. The activity settings enable Gemini Application activity and the Gemini chat history interface to show you these possible items. Google’s current activity documentation says that this store can include prompts, Gemini’s responses, files, images, shared video or screens, Gemini Live transcripts, and related product and location information.

The term “activity” can be misleading because you might think it’s a separate audit trail. If you delete an item from the activity items, you may also delete the associated chat conversation that you could see. Several persons in the Gemini community tested deleting two items from the Gemini activity list and they were able to keep the chat template briefly before they were no longer able to view them, and they had previously deleted the activity from the activity menu before they turned the activity setting off. Although the report does not provide any evidence that activity will always work the same on all accounts, it does provide evidence that Google has a documented relationship between saved activities and saved chats.

The Gemini Activity Setting is a part of your Google account. If you change your Gemini activity setting on the web, it will change your Gemini account control on the Android and iPhone platforms. The routes differ slightly:

  • On the web: Gemini ▸ Settings & help ▸ Activity.
  • On Android or iPhone: Gemini ▸ Menu ▸ Profile picture or initial ▸ Gemini Apps Activity.
  • From any supported browser: open myactivity.google.com/product/gemini while signed in to the right account.

In September 2026, we validated these routes and labels against Google’s documentation. The interface will see changes that are version dependent, so if the position of the menu has been altered since that time, please use the My Activity direct link instead of trying to determine where it would appear using older screenshots.

As of now, Keep Activity is enabled automatically for users aged 18+ on personal accounts. According to Google, saved activity is deleted automatically every 18 months unless a user chooses to delete saved activity within a shorter (3 months) or longer (36 months) retention timeframe. The deleted activity is determined by the user’s activity retention Timer, but the Timer is not a factor in determining whether or not Gemini can process a prompt that you submit to it at this time.

Organisational/work accounts have an additional layer of control. Google Workspace administrators can enforce conversation history and retention rules for a given organisation, so it is possible for an end user to have their settings locked down or for the end user to be unable to view their activity retention period based on their organisation’s policies. This scenario differs greatly from that of a personal account where the account holder has disabled Keep Activity.

What Turning Off Gemini Apps Activity Stops — and What Keeps Running

To end future chats from appearing in the Gemini Apps activity and from creating a persistent chat history, you can disable the “Keep Activity” feature. According to Google, these future chats will also not be used to train their AI models unless the user decides to send feedback for that chat. Even when you have your “Keep Activity” feature disabled, this does not necessarily delete any existing saved activity; instead, the commands to turn it off or delete are two different commands.

The “Keep Activity” feature does not prevent Google from collecting the information they need to answer your prompt; in order for Google Gemini to provide you with an accurate response, they need access to the text, file, image, audio, or screen content you provide to them. While the Keep Activity feature is disabled, Google’s Privacy Hub indicates that any chats made during this time frame are still stored with the user’s account for up to 72 hours, allowing them the ability to reply to the user, provide feedback, and protect Google, its users, and the general public. The Google Gemini service time frame does not display on the user’s normal activity history.

Here’s the practical scope of the control for a personal account:

What you’re checking With Keep Activity off What still needs its own control
Future chat history Not added to normal Activity or recent history Existing saved chats remain unless deleted
AI-model training Future chats aren’t used, unless you send feedback Feedback can include recent conversation context
Service processing Continues Google may retain the chat for up to 72 hours
Connected Apps Limited; availability depends on the surface Disconnect each app separately
Other Google history Unchanged Web & App Activity and Location History are separate
Gems A Gem can remain saved New chats with a Gem aren’t saved as normal history
Audio and Gemini Live improvement Separate consent, off by default Keep Activity must be on to enable that consent

The main difference across the various platforms is Connected Apps. According to the Connected Apps guide on the Google website, these apps are not supported on gemini.google.com or via iOS if ‘Keep Activity’ is disabled, whereas on Android, Device assistance, Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp can continue to be accessible when ‘Keep Activity’ is disabled. Furthermore, the Google Activity page lists the Gemini Notebook under some descriptions of being disabled. The best way to determine which Connected Apps are available on your device and account is to check directly on the Connected Apps screen.

The differing views between the activity page and Connected Apps may lead one to believe that their older articles about how to ‘turn off Connected Apps without losing functionality’ are still applicable. However, there is a marked difference between ensuring that your devices remain active while you are away from them vs. switching off Connected Apps altogether. At the minimum, switching off Connected Apps will cause you to lose chat activity continuity and disable many of the options available for integrating external applications into Gemini on your device. For instance, while switching off Connected Apps on Android will not automatically disconnect your phone calls, text messages, WhatsApp, or device assistance services, you will need to do so manually in order to prevent these services from being used by Gemini.

The Gemini Activity Settings That Don’t Work the Way You Expect

While Keep Activity serves as the overall history-and-use management for the entire application, Gemini’s other privacy settings serve different purposes. If you think of the other Gemini privacy settings and Keep Activity as a duplicate (or the same setting), it is possible there is data available from somewhere you did not check for or remove a feature you intended on keeping.

Auto-delete changes duration, not whether saving happens

Activity that is saved will only be auto-deleted. If you select a choice of either 3, 18, or 36 months, it provides an age limit on a rolling basis; selecting “Don’t auto-delete activity” means items will remain there until you manually delete them. So, for people who like to have their chat history searchable but don’t want to keep it forever, this is the happy medium option.

Changing the retention period to a shorter time frame is not equivalent to turning “Keep Activity” off. New chat records will continue to be added to the Activity Store, they may still be used by Google for personalization, and potentially, they may still be used to improve the services provided by Google until the established retention limit expires.

Memory depends on saved history

According to Google, Gemini’s Memories will use prior chats to customize future responses; Memory requires a Google Account that is older than 18 years old and keep activity on in order to use previous chats. When Memory is turned off, it will prevent Gemini from using past chats and does not delete the chats from the system. Likewise, it will take some time for the deletions of a chat to affect Future Custom Responses.

Connected Applications must be reviewed again because deleting your history does not terminate access. If a connected Application continues to operate, Gemini could access current information from that Application as it would still be connected to that Application. Disconnecting the Application does not erase previously copied information into the saved Gemini chat. If a previous chat contains Gmail information, Photostream information, or both, and you do not want them connected, delete the corresponding entry from Gemini activity and then disconnect the source Application.

Audio, Live, feedback, and Temporary Chat have their own rules

The option to improve Google Services with your audio and your Live (Gemini) videos and screen shares is turned off by default. If you want to enable this feature, you must have Keep Activity turned on prior to enabling the feature. If you turn Consent off for this feature, any improvements through audio/video/screen share will be stopped; however, live transcripts (and other materials) may still be subject to the terms of Keep Activity.

Feedback is another exception; when you submit feedback with Keep Activity turned off, Google states that the feedback may still keep the associated conversation context and will fall under the rules of feedback. Only submit feedback using either the thumbs up or thumbs down control on sensitive material if you are willing to include the context in your submission.

Temporary Chat allows for one-time interactions that do not show up in your recent chats and do not help train the AI models of Google or personalize the future answers. Temporary Chats should not be considered instant erasure; they may be stored for up to 72 hours by Google, and Temporary Chat cannot be used with Gems, Connected Apps, personalization, saved data, or feedback due to restrictions within the product. Temporary Chat is only available to users who have personal accounts signed in and can access the Gemini service, either via the web or the mobile app; it will not work for users with work/school accounts.

What Deleting Your Gemini Activity Doesn’t Reach — and What Google Still Keeps

If you delete Gemini activity, you may lose the chat history you have relied upon; therefore, it is advisable to export anything of value before choosing Delete, All Time or the Turn Off and Delete Activity option. To stop future long-term storage of activity while preserving existing data, the safest option is to turn off the feature while retaining the delete option.

According to Google, the deletion process begins by making the selected activity no longer visible, followed by physically deleting it from the storage system. However, deleting one item does not mean you have deleted all items that are related. For example, deleting a chat with a gem does not delete the gem, deleting a shared chat does not delete the public link associated with that chat, and deleting Gemini activity does not automatically delete all the information that is currently stored elsewhere on another Google service (or third-party) connected application.

There is also an exception for human review. The Privacy Hub advises that, if a human review has been conducted on the chat prior to it being disconnected from your Google account, that chat may exist on Google servers for a period of up to three years. Since those copies are no longer associated with your Google account activity, deleting the activity will not eliminate those copies from being retained by Google. Google further advises that in some cases, geolocated chat history may need to be kept longer than the three years for security, fraud prevention, legal intervention, or other purposes. As a result, you should not interpret Delete as an assurance that all potential copies will be removed immediately after deletion.

Export your chats before deleting

Google’s Gemini export instructions separate chats from Gems. The obvious standalone Gemini box in Takeout covers Gems; chats, generated media, and uploads sit under My Activity ▸ Gemini Apps.

  1. Open takeout.google.com and sign in with the same account used for Gemini.
  2. Select Deselect all.
  3. To export chats, select My Activity, then All activity data included.
  4. Select Deselect all in that list, choose Gemini Apps, and confirm.
  5. Select Next step, choose the delivery method and archive format, then create the export.
  6. Open the archive and confirm that the conversations you need are present before deleting anything.

Your source data will not be deleted. Instead, an export provides you with a separate copy of the source file (data). Therefore, when you decide to delete, you can be confident that your decision has not been a gamble on recoverability. According to Google, creating an archive may require several hours to several days and changes made immediately before or at the time of export may not be included in the export request for those changes.

Gemini Chats Disappeared, Keep Activity Is Locked, or Two Settings Disagree: Which One You’re In

A useful first question is “Where can I still see the conversation?” not “How do I get everything back?” The first question identifies the difference between a display issue and a change of the activity location that has been deleted, and therefore, different people will be responsible for those two issues.

The chats are in Activity but missing from the sidebar

Check myactivity.google.com/product/gemini while signed in to the exact account used for the chat. If the prompts are present there but the Gemini sidebar is empty, don’t delete activity and don’t cycle Keep Activity off and on as a first fix. The stored record still exists; the problem may be the interface or its conversation metadata.

Google clearly stated the pattern they had observed when a user experienced a “Gemini” incident on February 10th, 2026. This was a case where users had saved conversations, but those conversations went missing from the web and mobile sidebars while users could still see the history of their conversations. Google indicated that this was due to an internal process affecting conversation metadata and subsequently indicated that the issue had been resolved. Although a new case will not automatically be classified as the same incident, the recommendation to check “activity” prior to making any changes to your settings is still the same safe diagnostic order.

Once you have completed your comparison of the web and app versions and verified the account avatar on both, if there is an entry in “Activity” but it is blank on only one platform, send them feedback directly from the blank platform, including the following information: app version, OS, account type, and whether the record is stored in “Activity.” Although locally clearing the cache may help refresh a broken display, it does not restore deleted server records or change Google’s retention policy.

Keep Activity says only an admin can change it

When you are logged into your work or educational account through Google Workspace, you will often come across a message stating that you do not have access to your chat history. This is due to Google Workspace administrator controls that place chat history access into the hands of the administrator. When chat history is disabled by the administrator, users cannot retrieve previous conversations after leaving the conversation until 72 hours have elapsed, although Google may still retain a copy of them for that time period for purposes of supporting the service.

Your first step should be to contact your Google Workspace administrator for assistance instead of trying to resolve the issue on your own through fixes on your device. If you are the administrator and there is a discrepancy between the user-facing state and your Admin console regarding conversation history, check both your user-facing organisational unit configuration and your Gemini conversation-history policies before you open a support case with Google Workspace support. It has been reported by a member of the Google Workspace community that there was a discrepancy between the Admin console for a super administrator and the user-facing display regarding chat history, which illustrates that the presence of the visible toggle does not guarantee that the tenant state is accurately diagnosed.

Activity is empty after you deleted or turned it off

If you selected the option to Turn off and delete activity, deleted a date range, or removed individual items of activity, it is possible that missing chats are not the result of a sync failure but rather a deliberate action taken by the user. The 72 hours of service is not an assurance of restoration and is not typically considered a backup for user access. If you previously downloaded a Takeout archive, or exported your chat data before deleting it, you may have an opportunity to recover what you lost. However, do not assume that by re-enabling this setting your chat history will be restored.

In the example of one community participant, many of their older chats appeared to come back for a brief time after turning activity back on before disappearing after the 72 hours ended. This is only one example of what can occur; therefore, it is not a guarantee that any material will be returned after the initial 72-hour period. If these materials are important and you have no other copies, you should contact Google support as soon as possible, but you should keep your expectations realistic.

Leave Gemini Apps Activity On or Turn It Off: What You Give Up Either Way

Google’s documentation shows that saved activity can be used by them to track your account, so deciding if persistent history and connectedness are worth that functionality will be key in determining which option you should choose. There is no single option that will preserve all the conveniences of saved activity while ensuring there is no further processing of your activity.

Use this checklist to pick the least disruptive option:

  • Leave Keep Activity on if you need long-running chat history, Memory, and the broadest Connected Apps support. Shorten auto-delete to 3 months if a smaller history window meets your needs, and leave the separate audio and Gemini Live improvement consent off unless you actively want to contribute those recordings.
  • Turn Keep Activity off without deleting if you want future chats excluded from normal long-term history and model training, except when you send feedback. Expect the 72-hour service window, loss of persistent chat continuity, and reduced Connected Apps availability.
  • Use Temporary Chat selectively if most conversations should remain saved but a particular exchange shouldn’t enter recent history, training, or personalization. It still carries short-term processing and feature limits.
  • Disconnect individual apps if the real concern is access to Gmail, Photos, WhatsApp, or another service. The history switch and app authorization are separate controls.
  • Export, then delete existing activity only when you also want past account history removed. Confirm the archive first and remember that deletion doesn’t reach reviewed copies, separate services, public links, or data a connected app already received.
  • Ask your administrator if the account is managed. A Workspace user can’t override a domain conversation-history policy from the Gemini app.

In terms of user control on your personal account(s), “turn it down” is likely the best middle-ground solution. You should consider keeping History on until the Auto-Delete interval set by the application has passed; if History isn’t needed anymore the best option is to use ‘Temporary Chats’ for any message exchanges that are intended for one-time use, and disconnect any Applications from your personal account(s) that you do not need. Alternatively, if the primary concern is that future models will be developed based upon the messages stored in these applications as opposed to the continuity of your account(s) or any integration of other Applications with your accounts, then you may want to turn your History/Auto-Delete feature off completely.

Choose the Gemini setting that matches your risk

While Gemini Apps’ Activity controls help you maintain a continuous account history and track how it’s used, they do not eliminate the processing necessary to provide you with answers nor will they substitute for the other control options for connected apps, memory, user feedback and other Google-related activities. Before making any changes, consider whether you prioritize shorter retention periods, lack of standard future activity history, limited apps connected to your account or deleting existing chats. Then use the actual controls that provide you with these controls. Also, export any significant conversations prior to deleting them and avoid using a privacy switch to mean that it’s a harmless log; this may create a permanent loss of data from your preference change instead of a reversible one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn off Keep Activity without deleting old Gemini chats?

Certainly. Select Turn off, rather than selecting both Turn off and delete activity. Any future chats will not become part of your standard long-term Activity, while previously recorded chats will still be under your current retention policies and any future deletion decisions.

Does uninstalling Gemini delete my activity?

No. The Gemini Apps Activity is part of your Google Account, rather than being associated with the installation of the application on Android or iOS devices. Therefore, if you delete the Gemini application from your mobile device, this will not delete the activity from your Google Account or the Gemini Apps Activity page and will continue to exist within your account. You can manage your activity from either the Gemini Apps Activity page or the Google My Activity page.

Why can I still use Phone or Messages on Android after turning activity off?

When Keep Activity is turned off for Android devices that are supported by Google, Device assistance, Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp remain functional. If you want to disable these services from being accessible by Gemini, you can do so individually within your Connected Apps settings.
