How to Delete Your Gemini History on Any Device — and What Google Still Keeps

When it comes to deleting Gemini history, it is important to remove the activity from your Google Account and not just delete the chat title from the sidebar. By removing the activity from your account, you are removing the selected conversations from Gemini history and allowing Google to delete them, but that does not mean they will be deleted completely. The deletion process starts with Gemini Apps Activity, with Google’s help page specifying that deletion from view is the first stage of deletion and storage removal will follow.

The Google Gemini Apps Privacy Hub has an important tradeoff for individuals looking to delete their chat records, stating that human reviewers may review chat transcripts, but those reviews will not be deleted when the user’s activity and account are removed, and may remain in Google’s storage for up to three years, separate from any particular user account. In order to completely delete any activity (and history) connected to their Gemini Account, a user should understand how their Gemini History is delineated between the sidebar and the Activity Page and confirm that after deletion of the account or records, the history is also completely deleted as well. A user should make sure to distinguish the two areas where Gemini’s history is shown.

What “Gemini History” Actually Is (and Why It Shows Up in Two Places)

The term “Gemini History” refers to the data saved to your Google Account associated with the Gemini application. Gemini History does not contain a separate archive stored exclusively within the mobile application; the Gemini application and Gemini.web provide views into pinned and recent chats. The Gemini application history function provides account-level records associated with chat activity, and Gemini Apps Activity shows the account-level activity connected with those chats.

For all practical intents and purposes, these are two different views of the same record rather than two separate garbage cans. The sidebar of the Gemini interface is centered upon the conversations you can reopen, rename, pin, or delete; while the application history function catalogs the records associated with those conversations, including prompts, chats with Gem, Gemini Live materials (including transcripts, audio files, uploaded files, and shared screens) when the settings are correctly configured.

This difference between the two can create confusion as well, as it can produce the scenario of a chat being absent from the sidebar while the prompt associated with that chat may still be visible in the application history section of the account. There have been documented incidents of Gemini conversations that had their metadata validly maintained within Activity but their sidebar entries hidden within the Gemini platform. This means that the lack of a sidebar entry does not guarantee that the conversation was deleted; rather, the lack of a sidebar entry indicates that you should check the Gemini application history for the conversation in its entirety.

Clearing the application cache or reinstalling Gemini will not result in server-side removal of the history control for your Google Account. Although these options may alter data related to what is shown on your device, they do not eliminate the archived data on the activity controls maintained by Google for your particular account.

Before You Delete: Check Whether Your History Is Actually Gone

An empty chat list first presents itself as a concern for diagnosing an issue rather than removing an issue (as in deleting). In other words, if your Activity contains the conversation or prompt that you’ve kept, deleting the Activity would simply take away the ability to retrieve the conversation you were intending to bring back into the chat list.

Check the account-level record first

  1. Open Gemini Apps Activity directly and confirm that the profile picture belongs to the Google Account you used in Gemini. Look for a recent prompt or a phrase you remember from the missing chat.
  2. If the activity is still listed, open its details and copy anything important before changing a setting. The record may not restore the sidebar immediately, but it tells you that the missing view and the account record are not showing the same thing.
  3. Open Gemini on the web with that same account, or sign out and sign back in to refresh the account session. A service-side display problem can affect the list of conversations without removing the activity behind it; Google’s status dashboard has recorded this kind of incident.
  4. If the activity entry is missing too, check the account, the date range, Keep Activity, and the auto-delete choice before treating the absence as a completed deletion. If the content matters, export it before trying a destructive control.

When you have a visible chat that doesn’t have a three-dot menu, you should use the associated activity item instead of cleaning up the local app data. Under Google’s activity controls you can delete specific items; therefore, having no menu doesn’t necessarily mean you should clean your local housekeeping with privacy cleanup.

Delete a Single Gemini Chat (When You Just Want One Conversation Gone)

For deleting Gemini-chats individually without selecting a timeframe, this applies strictly to personal account users having chat history capabilities. For work and school user accounts, only account admins can manage account settings related to chat deletion.

On Android or iPhone/iPad

  1. Open the Gemini mobile app.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Under “Recent,” touch and hold the chat you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete.

On the web

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and open Menu if the side panel is hidden.
  2. Under “Recent,” find the chat you want to remove.
  3. On a computer, hover over the chat and click More; on a touch device, open the chat and use More.
  4. Choose Delete.

According to Google’s Chat Management documentation, the deletion of a conversation from either a pinned or recent chat also deletes chat activity associated with the conversation and therefore, removing the relevant sidebar item is more than cosmetic. In addition to the conversation being deleted, all content created within the conversation (such as canvas documents, application, etc.) will also be deleted when you delete the conversation from either location.

Deleting a branched conversation is treated differently than a pin or recent conversation. Google states that deleting a branched conversation does not delete the original version of the conversation and deleting the original version of the conversation does not delete the branch. Before selecting the Delete action, make sure you know which conversation you are taking action upon.

Delete All Your Gemini History on Android, iPhone, or the Web

For a personal account, the bulk control is in Gemini Apps Activity. The entry point differs by surface, but the final menu uses the same time-based choices.

Surface Open Gemini Apps Activity Choose the range
Android app Menu → Profile picture or initial → Gemini Apps Activity Delete → All time
iPhone or iPad app Menu → Profile picture or initial → Gemini Apps Activity Delete → All time
Web app Settings & help → Activity Delete → All time

This table is used to separate the items that are to be deleted from the ones that are not to be deleted. When you open Activity, the deletion menu under Activity can cover All time, last hour, last day, or Custom range. You can delete the activities for a single day on the Activity page with the delete by a specific day or delete by a specific activity item.

Before you choose a range for deletion, make sure that you export a copy of the activity in the export section of this Help article. Once you have exported a copy, you can come back to this menu after checking the archive. Deletion is irreversible. Google states that the first step in the deletion process is to make the activity unavailable to view, and the second step will begin the process of deleting it from the storage systems.

When making the export choice, select the path for your device to open the Delete option, choose the smallest range that meets your needs, and then confirm the action on the screen. Do not choose All time because the chat list may not look right and it will encompass everything. You should always use the smallest possible range of time when deleting items.

The nearby activity controls answer different questions:

  • Delete removes existing activity in the range or item you choose. It does not, by itself, turn off future activity saving.
  • Turn off changes what happens to future activity. It does not delete past records already saved in the account.
  • Turn off and delete activity combines those two actions: it turns off future activity saving and starts deleting the activity already covered by the control.

While specific confirmation wording may differ depending on which interface is used, the decision itself remains the same—first select your desired range, export any needed records, then choose between removing existing records, freezing the building of a historical record, or both.

What Auto-Delete Does, and How to Stop the History Building Up Again

The auto-delete feature is the most balanced option for keeping a search history but not saving all your searches indefinitely. Currently available in Google’s personal account settings, this feature allows you to choose whether to have your search history deleted automatically after three months, 18 months, or three years, or have no automatic deletions at all. The default setting is 18 months, and the auto-delete feature determines when Google begins automatically deleting old search history for Gemini Apps Activity in your account.

Change the auto-delete period

To delete activity older than a specified time period in the Gemini app (on your mobile device), open the Gemini app on your mobile device (Android or iOS) and tap on the menu icon (it looks like three dots) and select “Your Profile” then click on “Gemini Apps Activity.” At the top of the screen, you will have the option to delete activity older than …months (by default) or choose an automatic delete option based on timeframe (3 months, 18 months, or 36 months). After selecting your preferred timeframe, tap “Next.”

If you are using the web version of Gemini, go to the following link: gemini.google.com. Click on “Settings/Help” in the top left navigation bar → then click on “Activity.” On this page you will see the same “Deleting activity older than … months” options as described above. In addition, you also have the option of selecting “Don’t auto-delete activity” from the list of options above. After selecting your preferred option, follow the instructions to confirm your choice.

Auto-delete does not mean “stop saving data.” Selecting a 3-month auto delete will still retain any activity that is not older than that until it hits that mark. Selecting the “Don’t auto-delete activity” will remove any scheduled deletion; however, all prior activity will remain intact. There is still the option to delete data manually.

Stop saving future chats

To stop collecting a visible history, go to the same Activity screen, tap or click On, and select Turn off. As per Google, conversations created after you turn off Keep Activity will still be saved with your account for at least 72 hours in order for Google to provide services and collect feedback, however, this activity won’t be recorded in Gemini Apps Activity.

You will have to sacrifice access to Connected features to use Gemini. If you turn Keep Activity off, Google’s current documentation indicates that the Connected Apps that are available will change. Where Android is limited to a small number of Supported Apps, the Connected Apps will not be available while Keep Activity is off both in the Gemini web app and Apple’s iOS operating system.

Another option is to create a Temporary Chat from your Personal Account. You can create one through either the Gemini mobile or web app by going into the Menu and selecting Temporary chat next to New chat. Temporary Chats are not saved in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity; additionally, because they do not stay in Temporary Chats, you will not be able to return to any conversations that you leave, nor can you use some Gems or other Connected Apps while in Temporary Chat mode, since both require Keep Activity to be turned on.

Export Your Gemini History Before You Delete It

There are two options in Google Takeout that have similar names. The Gemini box is for exporting the Gemini Gems data. If you want to include your Gemini conversations and created media and your uploads (i.e., anything created through the Gemini service), you need to select “My Activity” → “All activity data included” under “Gemini Apps.”

Use this pre-deletion sequence:

  1. Go to takeout.google.com and sign in to the same Google Account you use with Gemini.
  2. Under “Select data to include,” choose Deselect all.
  3. Select Gemini only if you want your Gems and their data.
  4. To include chats and related activity, select My Activity, choose All activity data included, select Deselect all in the pop-up, check Gemini Apps, and select Ok.
  5. Choose Next step, select a delivery method and archive format, and create the export.

Step 4 is the critical checkbox to select. Only selecting Gemini to create your archive will result in a file containing Gems but not your chat history. So if your Gemini export is empty, it doesn’t mean there weren’t any chats at all; check “My Activity” → “Gemini Apps” to see if that data is present and make sure you used the same Google account when using Takeout.

According to Google’s instructions on exporting Gemini data, any changes made after the request to export the data and before the creation of the archive may not be reflected in the final product. Make sure to review the archive before deleting anything, and know that downloading a copy of the data will not remove any of your activity from Google’s servers.

What Survives Your Deletion, and Why

When you delete the Gemini Apps activity from your Google account, they will remove that activity from your view in your account, and Google will begin their larger removal process for all content they have stored. However, deleting your Gemini Apps activity does not delete any of the other content you have created, reviewed or copied or stored with other Google services.

Data Google says is outside the normal activity deletion

  • Human-reviewed chats. Google’s Privacy Hub says chats reviewed by human reviewers, along with related details such as language, device type, location information, or feedback, aren’t deleted when you delete activity. Google says those reviewed records are retained for up to three years after being disconnected from your account.
  • Short-term service copies. Temporary Chats and chats created while Keep Activity is off can be held with the account for up to 72 hours so Gemini can respond, protect the service, and process feedback. Google says this activity doesn’t appear in Gemini Apps Activity, so an All time deletion there is not a complete map of every short-lived service record.
  • Data in other Google services. If Gemini works with another Google service, that service may save and use its own copy under its own policy. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity doesn’t delete data already saved in services such as Wallet or YouTube.
  • Your Gems. Deleting a conversation that used a Gem doesn’t delete the Gem itself. The conversation and the reusable Gem are separate objects with separate management controls.
  • Public links and third-party posts. Deleting a shared chat from Gemini Apps Activity doesn’t delete its related public link. Remove the link separately from Your public links, and delete any post containing the link from the third-party site where you published it.

The survival of metadata is not guaranteed for every related item. According to Google, removing the activity associated with a Gemini Live Chat will remove all associated audio recordings, transcripts, videos, and screen-sharing files for that activity. Therefore, a good way to think about this is separating the activity itself from where its copies or related objects may reside, as the settings to delete the first will not automatically extend to the other entities.

Work, School, and Shared Accounts: When You Can’t Just Delete It

The path for using Gemini apps on a personal account is not the same as using Gemini apps on a work or school account. Google states that an administrator of the Google Workspace can manage the Gemini apps activity for a user on a work or school account, which means that a user will not have the same options as they would on a personal account regarding retention settings, the ability to see the retention period, and the ability to delete chat logs.

Workspace users have their administrator manage the retention of their chat history in Gemini apps by using the administrator’s Gemini app settings for a given app. At present, the documentation from Google outlines three, eighteen, or thirty-six months for the retention of a chat history; eighteen months is listed as the default for that setting. Administrators may choose to disable the ability to save chat history or restrict a user’s ability to delete chat history.

Vault creates a second layer of protection. Users who delete their chat history within a workspace can hide the conversation from their view, but the conversation will still be stored in accordance with the Vault rules of the organization. Users may see a notification indicating that activity on Gemini could be visible to Workspace administrators or holders of Vault accounts. The Workspace controls for temporary chats and deletion provide a clear description of this distinction.

If your account is a work or a school account, before using any of the personal account processes, check that the account that you are using has the correct avatar and email domain associated with it and be sure to check with your administrator what control type (Gemini conversation history, Conversation Retention, Allow users to delete Conversations, or Vault Retention) applies to your account. Clearing your Gemini history within a Workspace app (e.g., Docs or Gmail) does not delete your activity from Gemini Apps.

If there are multiple users for a Google account, treat the Gemini users’ activity as shared account data. When an activity is deleted, it affects that shared account; it does not delete a single user’s activity from their phone or their browser profile. Separate accounts will provide a more secure way of storing and maintaining separate histories.

Web

The action of deleting data regarding Gemini history will eliminate the viewable account activity but will initiate a larger deletion process of the records by Google. It does not delete all copies of the data or related services. Therefore, it is recommended that individuals first review their Activity page, then create a Takeout export for My Activity → Gemini Apps, and select the desired range of control and range. This ensures that you maintain your best personal copies as Google starts to delete data, while leaving the decisions for work-related accounts and Vault with the entity that manages them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn off Gemini history without deleting old chats?

Correct. You may prevent any future conversations from showing in your Gemini Apps Activity by disabling Keep Activity. All previous records are still available on the Gemini website unless removed from that page separately.

Can I use Temporary Chat on a work or school account?

Temporary chat capability on Google Docs is only available to Google Account user’s personal accounts, not to Google Accounts for Work or School. If you are using a managed Google Account, the administrator will determine whether to allow temporary chats and the ability to delete them. In addition, administrators of managed accounts can configure Vault rules to retain user temporary chat activity.

If I delete a chat, what happens to Canvas content inside it?

Google warns that deleting a chat will also delete all content (Canvas documents and applications) associated with the chat. You should save documents or apps before deleting your chat conversation because deleted chats and activities are managed together as a single unit.
