You can migrate your WhatsApp Messenger account from Android to iPhone using Apple’s Move to iOS transfer tool during the initial setup of your iPhone. The main disadvantage of using this official method is that you must perform the transfer before setting up your iPhone; therefore, you will only be able to migrate your WhatsApp chat history to a new iPhone or an erased one, but if you try to transfer after your iPhone has been set up, it will need to be erased again before performing an additional transfer.
This article is written as a guide for anyone who wants to transfer their WhatsApp Messenger account from Android to iPhone in the U.S. It does not discuss using WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp Business, third-party migration tools, or any method other than the official way. Keep your Android device until you have verified that all of your WhatsApp messages and media have been successfully received on your new iPhone.
Check Whether Your iPhone Is Ready for the Official Transfer
It is essential to understand whether the iPhone is still on the setup screen that both Apple and WhatsApp require, before making a choice as to which button to tap.
The instructions for Moving from Android to iPhone by Apple include selecting the option to transfer from an Android during the iPhone setup process. If your iPhone setup has already been completed, as per Apple, you will have to erase the current iPhone and perform the process again and that will also erase all local content and settings. This should be seen as a clean slate rather than an additional steps of troubleshooting.
Make an additional backup before erasing an iPhone that still has any content that you want to keep. Apple allows backup of an iPhone via iCloud and computer backups or a computer backup and if you use the temporary iCloud storage option, follow the procedure precisely before you erase your current device; Apple says that through its temporary iCloud storage guidance, you have a window of 21 days to complete the process of transferring the backup.
The backup will serve as a safety net for the new iPhone but not as a guarantee of the ability to merge the old iPhone content along with the Android WhatsApp history of the old device. Although Apple’s restore instructions are written to restore device backup from an old iPhone onto a recently erased or new iPhone, there is no reference to the combination of two separately headed WhatsApp histories. Therefore, according to official WhatsApp, there is no means of merging old Android Chats with New iPhone Chats.
WhatsApp Android-to-iPhone Preflight and Backup-First Reset Decision Tree
Use this decision tree before you erase anything:
- Is the iPhone new, erased, or still showing the initial setup screens?
- Yes: Continue to the preflight below.
- No: Decide whether the Android WhatsApp history is important enough to justify an erase.
- No: Stop here. The official Move to iOS route is not available after setup, and this guide does not recommend an unofficial no-reset path.
- Yes: Back up the iPhone first. Confirm that the backup finished. Then erase the iPhone through Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. When asked about the eSIM, keep it unless you deliberately intend to remove it and understand that your carrier may need to reactivate service.
- Is the Android phone running WhatsApp Messenger, not WhatsApp Business?
- Yes: Continue.
- No: Stop. Android-to-iPhone migration for WhatsApp Business is not supported by the WhatsApp help page linked below.
- Can both phones use the same WhatsApp phone number?
- Yes: Continue. Make sure you can receive the verification code for that number.
- No: Do not start the import. WhatsApp says the history cannot be moved directly to a different number. Change the number inside WhatsApp on Android first, then begin the device move.
- Are the operating systems and apps current enough?
- Yes: Continue.
- No: Update through the official system and app stores before starting.
- Do you have power, a stable connection, and enough iPhone storage?
- Yes: Continue to the transfer.
- No: Fix those conditions first. A large media library needs room on the iPhone, not merely room for the message text.
After answering all the questions in the tree and reaching the last question and confirming that everything has been answered to satisfaction, you are done making the reset decision. Do not erase the Android phone, uninstall WhatsApp, or use the Google Drive backup as an alternate method to transfer your setup.
Run the WhatsApp Transfer Preflight
This is a checklist when the user still has access to WhatsApp; please run it while WhatsApp is still open on Android devices. If the item has been checked, this confirms that the prerequisite has been met.
- The account is WhatsApp Messenger. The official Android-to-iPhone flow does not cover WhatsApp Business.
- The same phone number will be verified on the iPhone. You do not need to move the physical SIM before the data transfer, but you do need a way to receive the verification code.
- The iPhone is new or factory-reset. Do not activate WhatsApp on the iPhone before the import. Activation closes the setup-time restoration window.
- Move to iOS is installed from Google Play. Use Apple’s Move to iOS listing, not an APK mirror or a modified installer.
- WhatsApp is updated from Google Play on Android. During setup, install the current WhatsApp Messenger from the App Store on the iPhone when the transfer has finished.
- The Android phone is on a currently supported operating system. The WhatsApp migration help text has historically listed Android 5 or later, but WhatsApp’s current Android download page lists Android 6.0 or later, and the Android 5 support cutoff took effect on September 8, 2026. For guidance dated September 19, 2026, use Android 6.0 or later. The migration instructions also call for iOS 15.5 or later, so use iOS 15.5 or later on the iPhone.
- Both phones are connected to power. A transfer can take much longer than its initial estimate when media is included.
- Wi-Fi is on. The phones should be on the same Wi-Fi network, or Android should join the iPhone’s temporary hotspot when Move to iOS instructs it to do so. Apple also documents a direct USB-C connection on supported hardware, but do not switch connection methods halfway through a failed run.
- The iPhone has enough free storage. Apple says the content being moved must fit on the destination device. Check the Android WhatsApp storage footprint and leave room for iOS, the app, and other content you are transferring.
- The Android phone will remain untouched. Do not delete WhatsApp data, wipe the phone, or make the Android your only source of verification until the iPhone import has been checked.
As of the date of this guide, the Android-to-iPhone help page of WhatsApp still displays wording from Android 5 OS regarding the requirements to migrate to iPhone; however, the current Android OS 6 download link shows a newer OS 6 requirement. When there is conflict between the official WhatsApp page(s) due to one not being updated, you should use the support requirement from the most recent version of the app and use the most restrictive option. If Google Play is preventing you from downloading the current version of the WhatsApp Messenger app to your Android phone, do not perform a hard reset expecting that to allow you to transfer WhatsApp.
Know What Will and Will Not Move to the iPhone
Outline your expectations prior to utilizing the progress bar; you will transfer all of your WhatsApp messages and media as indicated in the Apple transfer guide. Further specification on what types of WhatsApp accounts and chats will work with this migration can be found in the WhatsApp migration documentation.
The official transfer is intended to bring over:
- Account information and the profile photo.
- Individual chats and group chats.
- Communities and WhatsApp Channels updates.
- Chat history and supported media, including the photos, videos, documents, and voice messages stored in conversations.
- Supported WhatsApp settings.
The following are outside the supported Android-to-iPhone WhatsApp history transfer:
- WhatsApp call history.
- The display name, which you may need to enter again during profile setup.
- Peer-to-peer payment messages.
- Media received through WhatsApp Channels.
- WhatsApp Business chat data through this Android-to-iPhone flow.
The transfer also has two important boundaries:
- It is tied to the same phone number. A different number cannot be selected as the destination during the import. If your number is changing, use WhatsApp’s Change Number process on Android before the device migration.
- It is not a merge. If the iPhone already has a WhatsApp history, that history is not combined with the Android history. WhatsApp says that an already-active iPhone must be wiped and started again to retrieve the old history. Do not send new messages on the iPhone while deciding whether to retry; those messages cannot later be merged into the Android history through the official flow.
Typically, your old Android will still have all its WhatsApp data after transferring to your new iPhone, unless you either uninstall the app or reset the device. Additionally, there is no automatic backup of WhatsApp data via iCloud as part of the migration process. Once you have confirmed that everything transferred successfully and appears on your new iPhone, you should manually back up your chats using the backup settings available in WhatsApp.
It is also important to understand that exporting a chat is different from migrating a chat. An exported chat is simply a copy of a single conversation that can be viewed on a device outside of WhatsApp, whereas a migration creates a backup file that allows you to restore that conversation to your new iPhone through the WhatsApp app. An export will not allow you to migrate your WhatsApp conversation from your old Android device to your new iPhone using the Move to iOS app.
Transfer WhatsApp During iPhone Setup
Follow this sequence without activating WhatsApp on the iPhone early.
- Leave Android ready. Open WhatsApp on Android and confirm that the chats you need are visible. Connect both phones to power, keep them near each other, and complete the preflight.
- Start the iPhone setup. Turn on the new or erased iPhone and follow the setup assistant until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Choose the Android route. Tap From Android. On Apple’s current setup flow, choose the option to transfer with the Move to iOS app.
- Open Move to iOS on Android. Accept its terms and allow the permissions it requires. If the iPhone displays a six-digit or ten-digit code, enter that code on Android.
- Join the temporary connection. The iPhone creates a temporary Wi-Fi network. When Move to iOS asks Android to connect, accept it and wait for the Transfer Data screen.
- Select WhatsApp. On the Android transfer list, select WhatsApp. You may select other supported content if you understand that it will also consume iPhone storage. Do not manually browse to a WhatsApp folder under Files as a substitute; that is not the supported WhatsApp migration route.
- Start WhatsApp’s preparation step. Tap Start on Android when WhatsApp opens the transfer preparation screen. Wait while it prepares the chat history and media. WhatsApp may sign the account out of Android after the data is prepared; do not interpret that as permission to erase the phone.
- Return to Move to iOS. Tap Next on Android to return to Move to iOS, then tap Continue to send the prepared data to the iPhone.
- Wait for the iPhone progress bar. Leave both devices alone, near each other, and connected to power. Keep Move to iOS on screen on Android. Even if Android says it has finished, wait for the loading bar on the iPhone to complete. A call, app switch, network change, or low battery can interrupt the handoff.
- Finish iPhone setup. When Apple reports that the transfer is complete, finish the remaining iPhone setup screens. Music, books, PDFs, and any unmatched apps may require separate handling; those are not signs that the WhatsApp import itself failed.
- Install WhatsApp from the App Store. Download the current WhatsApp Messenger app on the iPhone. Do not use a modified copy or WhatsApp Business for this import.
- Verify the same number and import. Open WhatsApp, verify the same phone number used on Android, and tap Start when WhatsApp presents the chat-import prompt. Let the import finish before judging it by the first screen that appears.
- Do not retire Android yet. Continue to the verification method below. Only after the chats, media, and new iPhone WhatsApp backup have been checked should you decide what to do with the Android phone.
Fix a Missing WhatsApp Option or Failed Import
Identify an appropriate symptom that matches your experience. Begin with the least intrusive checks. Erasing is an entirely new attempt to transfer. It isn’t a universal fix for all network or storage problems.
WhatsApp is missing from the Transfer Data list
Check these conditions in order:
- Confirm that the iPhone is still new or factory-reset and has not completed setup.
- Confirm that the Android app is WhatsApp Messenger, not WhatsApp Business or a modified build.
- Update Android, WhatsApp, and Move to iOS through their official update channels.
- Confirm that the Android phone is running Android 6.0 or later under the current September 2026 WhatsApp support requirement, and that the iPhone meets the migration requirement of iOS 15.5 or later.
- Confirm that the same phone number will be used on the iPhone.
- Restart both phones and begin again from the iPhone’s setup screen.
Do not select a generic WhatsApp folder when using file browser. The correct route is the WhatsApp listing found on the Move to iOS transfer list.
If you are unable to find an option after performing those checks, stop before attempting to erase again. Retain your data from the Android device, and reach out to WhatsApp support with the phone model, OS version, WhatsApp version, and exactly when the option goes away. Also, contact Apple if the Move to iOS connection or setup assistant fails.
The code or temporary Wi-Fi connection does not work
Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance recommends a clean connection attempt:
- Keep Wi-Fi enabled on Android and keep Move to iOS in the foreground.
- Turn off Android cellular data for the attempt.
- Temporarily disable Android features that automatically switch between Wi-Fi networks or return to cellular data.
- Forget saved Wi-Fi networks if Android keeps reconnecting to the wrong network.
- Enter the one-time code exactly as shown on the iPhone, then join the temporary iPhone-created Wi-Fi network when prompted.
- Restart both phones and generate a new code if the pairing state is stale.
If the Android phone does not connect to the temporary network, do not proceed to select data. The phones have yet to get to the actual point of transfer.
The transfer is slow or appears stuck
The WhatsApp media library on a large number of devices could take a significant amount of time for preparation and sending of files. Keep both devices connected to power, close together, and untouched if the progress bar on the iPhone continues to change. Do not make a phone call from the Android, change to a different Android application, or allow any power-saving feature to interrupt the Move to iOS process.
If the progress bar has clearly failed rather than merely slowed, use this order:
- Confirm that the Android phone and iPhone have enough free space for the selected content.
- Confirm that both phones remain on power and that Android cellular data is off.
- Restart both phones.
- Retry from a freshly erased iPhone setup, but only after the backup-first reset decision has been satisfied.
- Select WhatsApp and only the other content you actually need for that run, then wait for the iPhone’s progress bar to finish.
Do not delete data from the Android WhatsApp app to make a “clean” failed transfer. The previous phone will serve as the source for fallback purposes.
WhatsApp shows an unknown error or the import fails at a percentage
Perform a restart on both devices and run through the “official sequence” again. Review the following requirements: That both devices have the same phone number active on WhatsApp; that both devices have the most current version of WhatsApp app installed; That the Android Device has enough Storage space; That the device has adequate Power; And, most importantly, that you did not activate WhatsApp on the iPhone before executing the Move-to-iOS transfer. Percentages alone do not provide information sufficient to qualify it as an actual diagnosis. In addition, do NOT treat any suggestion provided by other users in the community to download/install an old APK of WhatsApp or to join any unverified Beta version build or to change any hidden app files as official solutions to this problem. Additionally, do NOT treat switching some unrelated Cloud settings on and/or off as a potential “solution.”
If repeated clean attempts fail, preserve the Android phone and record:
- The exact error wording.
- Where it failed: pairing, WhatsApp preparation, Move to iOS transfer, or iPhone import.
- Android and iOS versions.
- WhatsApp and Move to iOS versions.
- Approximate WhatsApp storage size and available iPhone storage.
- Whether the same number was used and whether WhatsApp had already been activated on the iPhone.
Send any information received to either WhatsApp Support or Apple Support, depending upon what stage of the move process did NOT get completed correctly. This guide does not endorse/substitute a third-party provider or service/process as an alternative to completing the Official Setup Process of the devices.
The iPhone setup finished, but the chats are not there
Verify that you downloaded from the App Store and that you used the same phone number to activate the old account on the iPhone. If the History from the old account is NOT showing on the iPhone, DO NOT send NEW messages on the iPhone as you should NOT expect the Google Drive Restoration for the old account history to MIX with the iPhone history. WhatsApp has a documented expectation that if this occurs, you will need to wipe the iPhone again and COMPLETE the Official Transfer Process again before activating WhatsApp on the iPhone.
If, prior to wiping again, go back through the Backup/Restore decision tree and ensure that your Android source backup is still able to be restored and re-run the pre-flight check. If the Android Phone is NOT showing the expected history anymore then stop re-installing/re-adding data or contacting WhatsApp for support.
The iPhone looks full or only some content transferred
Apple has explained that the Destination iPhone may be listed as being out of memory even when the transfer is incomplete. You should check how much available storage you have compared to the amount of Android content you are transferring. If the capacity of the Destination iPhone was reached during the transfer process, or if you only completed part of the transfer, then according to Apple, the only way to resolve this issue is to delete everything on the Destination iPhone and re-try the setup transfer process with a device that has enough memory to store all of your Android data. Prior to deleting anything off of the Destination iPhone, ensure you have created a backup of any data located on the Destination iPhone and do not delete anything from the Destination iPhone until you have confirmed that your Android device and the backup are both accounted for.
Verify Your Chats and Media Before Retiring Android
Use the Verification Process as a Small Reconciliation rather than a simple “quick look” at what’s on the main screen of WhatsApp (on the Android). Apple recommends that you ensure all content has been transferred, whereas WhatsApp tells you that all your data is retained on the Android until deleted or wiped out. Use that “overlap” to check the new copy while you still have access to the old copy.
Make a pre-transfer verification snapshot
Before starting Move to iOS, choose a few representative conversations and write down a private, minimal manifest:
- One older conversation whose history matters.
- One recent one-to-one conversation.
- One group or community conversation.
- One media-heavy conversation.
- For each, note a distinctive message or phrase and the oldest and newest date you can see.
- In the media-heavy conversation, identify at least one photo, one video, one voice message, and one document if those types are present. Note a filename, subject, or other detail that will let you recognize the item later.
Do NOT send/Copy your Private Chat contents into a Public Document. The objective is to provide sufficient “anchors” so that you can make direct comparisons between the old and new phones – NOT to create an additional archive of private/sensitive messages.
Check the iPhone against those anchors
After the import and number verification finish:
- Confirm that the profile and phone number are the account you intended to move.
- Search for each distinctive message or phrase and open the matching chat.
- Compare the conversation’s visible date range and message order with the Android snapshot.
- Open the selected photo and document. Play the selected video and voice message. A thumbnail alone is not proof that the underlying media is usable.
- Open at least one group or community and confirm that the expected conversation and membership context are present.
- Check a few additional chats that were not in the pre-transfer sample so you do not validate only the easiest cases.
- Confirm that the expected exclusions are absent: WhatsApp call history, display name, peer-to-peer payment messages, and media received through WhatsApp Channels are not evidence of a failed transfer because they are outside the supported scope.
If any anchors are missing, i.e., you can’t access any media, the date range has been truncated, etc., STOP. Do NOT wipe the Android phone, Uninstall/Remove WhatsApp or Create/Order a new iPhone history with the intent of merging it later. Instead, go back into the Troubleshooting Checklist – before making any additional changes you have made to your current devices.
Create the first iPhone WhatsApp backup
Once your Chats & Media have checked out and are verified, use the built-in Chat Backup features of WhatsApp on your iPhone to make a backup to iCloud. WAIT for the WhatsApp App to inform you when the BACKUP is complete. If the WhatsApp App shows you a time when the Back-up was completed or the size of the Backup is also indicated, write that information down. Transferring FROM Android TO iPhone is NOT considered an Automatic iCloud Backup. Performing a BACKUP is a separate step to ensure the Chats and Media are protected.
DO NOT change anything on your Android phone until the iPhone BACKUP has been completed and you have finished any other “Spot Checks” that are important to you regarding the Transfer. Once this has been completed, only then should you sign off, RETIRE, RESET, or RE-PURPOSE your Android device.
Before You Reset the iPhone
Use this final checklist before choosing Erase All Content and Settings on an already-used iPhone:
- The Android WhatsApp history is visible and the phone has not been wiped.
- The iPhone backup has completed and you know how to restore it.
- You understand that the official flow replaces the iPhone’s current local state; it does not merge existing iPhone WhatsApp chats with Android chats.
- You have accepted that the official path requires a new or erased iPhone.
- Both phones meet the current operating-system and app requirements.
- WhatsApp Messenger, not WhatsApp Business, is the source app.
- The same phone number will be used on the iPhone.
- Both phones can remain on power and connected for the entire transfer.
- The iPhone has enough free storage for the selected Android content.
- You will not delete Android WhatsApp data until the iPhone chats, media, and first iCloud WhatsApp backup have been verified.
If any answer is no, postpone the reset. The safest official migration is the one you start only after the source, destination, backup, number, storage, and verification plan are all ready.
